Silent Songs Werkstatt

Nicola Hümpel developed together with the with 2nd year vocal students a workshop project at the Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding.

Silent Songs

Händel, Schubert, Purcell – known, famous and classics in the repertoire of performance houses large and small. But what do we feel when we hear an aria by Purcell or a song by Schubert? Can we relate to their music today or are we intimidated by it? Does it sweep us off our feet or leave us cold? Are we capable of grasping the intense emotional arias by Händel or understand the reciprocity between linguistic and musical expression in Schubert’s songs?

In Silent Songs we are guided through an intense and personal contention between the young vocalists and the last three hundred years of our musical heritage. Within the stress filed between intimacy and outburst, past and present, new forms vocal and corporal articulations are investigated. The vocalists draw on life-experience, their body’s range of movement and their own personal repertoire of emotions as material and tools for associations and improvisations. One dancer and two musicians accompany them during this process; taking in impulses from the group they develop them further. A scenic concert emerges from the creativity of the collective journey, enabling contemporary and carnal access to the music.

For the past several years Nicola Hümpel has alongside her professional career as director and producer been active as a teacher, who together with students of differing disciplines creates and discovers new artistic forms of expression.
