He studied Applied Theatre Studies in Giessen under H.-T. Lehmann, where he first encountered the person and works of Heiner Müller. His theatrical formation took place at the Frankfurt Opera under the artistic directors M. Gielen and K. Zehelein, including an assistantship on Wagner’s Ring directed by R. Berghaus. From 1993 to 2018, he shaped the Stuttgart State Opera as dramaturge, director, and chief dramaturge, creating internationally acclaimed productions with Jossi Wieler and Anna Viebrock. His co-direction with Wieler also took him to Salzburg, Amsterdam, Edinburgh, San Francisco, Moscow, and London. Recipient of numerous theatre and book awards, he served as chief dramaturge of the Vienna State Opera from 2020/21 to 2025.
