Vita

The Kuss Quartet draws its strength equally from a spirit of experimentation and devotion to tradition, from openness to new formats as well as from exploring profound virtuosity. At the same time, the ensemble continually expands the core repertoire around Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, which it has already presented on multiple award-winning recordings (including the German Record Critics’ Award 2025). Jana Kuss and Oliver Wille have been making music together for 35 years; with William Coleman and Mikayel Hakhnazaryan, they approach the eternal question of the string quartet – “Must it be?” – anew and with unclouded curiosity. Regular partners of the ensemble include Miklós Perényi, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Sarah Maria Sun, Maurice Steger, and Johannes Fischer. In 2021, the interdisciplinary Beethoven project “Force & Freedom” was created in collaboration with NICO AND THE NAVIGATORS. The production was recorded by ARTE and nominated for the Opus Klassik.

Over the past decade, the quartet has commissioned numerous new works. Enno Poppe, Aribert Reimann, Manfred Trojahn, Bruno Mantovani, Iris ter Schiphorst, Johannes Fischer, Mark Andre, and Francisco Coll have composed for the ensemble. Most recently, Sara Glojnarić’s new interdisciplinary headphone concert “Songs for the End of the World” was realized together with soprano Sarah Maria Sun. Partners in these world premieres included Concertgebouw and Muziekgebouw Amsterdam, Konzerthaus Berlin, Paris Biennale, Wigmore Hall London, and Suntory Hall Tokyo.
